French health authorities reported nearly 180 thousand new infections of coronavirus on Tuesday, December 28.
It is reported by Le Figaro.
The figure - 179,807 new patients - was almost double the previous maximum. Although the figures are given "in 24 hours," probably this also included data from tests done earlier, which were delayed through the holiday weekend. This assumption suggests that after a record 104,000 cases per day on December 25, about 30,000 infections were reported in the next two days.
France, with a population of about 67.3 million, has averaged 87,000 new cases a day over the past seven days.
In the last 24 hours, 242 coronavirus patients have died.
There are 17,405 patients in hospitals - 2,110 more than the previous day - and 3,416 in intensive care wards, 417 more than the day before.
In France, more than 76% of the population has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, and more than 23 million French have already received an intensifying third dose.
As previously reported, the government announced increased restrictions due to the growing epidemic. At the same time, the prime minister promised that curfews will not be imposed before the New Year.
There are also plans to replace the usual covid certificate as a pass to some public places with a "vaccine certificate", which confirms the receipt of vaccination. The rule will take effect on January 15, if the parliament approves the government bill.
