Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that the key decisions on sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 pipeline are almost ready. However, there are several reasons preventing them from moving forward.
Kuleba told this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"Our partners at our call have been very vividly involved in the development of this sanctions package, and I have been very pleased for several weeks with the way diplomacy between Washington, London and the capitals of the EU countries on this issue. Now we have this process to the stage where key specific decisions are almost ready, but how to move forward with them - we have not yet decided," the Minister stressed.
According to him, there are two reasons for the lack of a solution so far.
"The first is the disagreement among the actors as to whether we should finalize this package now and make it obvious to Russia...or threaten them with 'unspeakable suffering' through diplomatic channels, encouraging them to go along. So this discussion has slowed down the process," specified Kuleba.
He noted that no one denies the fact that the package of sanctions is necessary, but the question is "how to play this card tactically.
"And the second reason is the objective reality, the approach of the Catholic Christmas and the winding down of all activities on the diplomatic track, this also has its impact," Kuleba summarized.
As a reminder, the head of Naftohaz Ukrayiny, Yuriy Vitrenko, recently explained why sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline should be imposed now.
We would like to add that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed on the need to impose "powerful" sanctions against Russia. According to him, this is needed in order to prevent escalation to any state by Russia.
