Greece made changes to entry rules for foreigners

Greek authorities have clarified entry rules, saying foreign travelers can choose to enter Greece with a rapid antigen test or a PCR test.

Greece announced new restrictions on entry this week to curb the spread of a variant of the Omicron coronavirus.

Health authorities said that as of Dec. 19, a PCR test no older than 48 hours must be submitted for entry. Previously, proof of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19 or a negative test was required for travel.

However, slightly broader testing options were already announced Thursday night - all travelers over the age of five must show either a PCR test done no more than 72 hours before arrival or an express test 24 hours before arrival.

"The Omicron strain has prompted our country to adopt one-time measures for foreign visitors," said government spokesman Yannis Oikonomou.

He said the restrictions will apply during the Christmas season and are intended to moderate the spread of the pandemic and give Greeks more time to get additional vaccinations.
