Militants in Libya seize government building

In Libya, armed militants have occupied the Presidential Council building in the capital Tripoli, which is controlled by the Government of National Unity, and also surrounded other government buildings, including the Ministry of Defense. They are demanding the postponement of presidential elections.

Arab media are in disagreement over which faction is responsible for the night events. According to the TV channel Al Arabiya, the attackers are connected to the leader of the Al-Samoud militia Salah Badi from Misratah who had distributed a video the day before demanding to cancel the elections and accusing Adviser to the UN Secretary General Stephanie Williams of "a farce that is happening in Libya".

According to other versions, several groups took part in the attack on the government institutions, dissatisfied with the decision of the Presidential Council to dismiss Abdel Basset Marwan, commander of the military district of Tripoli.

We should remind you that on December 24, presidential elections are scheduled in Libya. Among others, the son of Libyan ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi, Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, and Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar are going to take part in them. Recently, there have been calls to postpone the elections; the electoral commission decided last week to delay the publication of the final list of presidential candidates.
