Germany says it is too late to stop Nord Stream-2 - Wolfgang Ischinger

The head of the Munich Security Conference, German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger believes that it is too late to stop the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, reports Oilpoint.

He said this in an interview with Handelsblatt.

"Nord Stream 2 remains not only a problem in relations with Ukraine and in the European Parliament, but also a transatlantic problem," Ischinger said, adding that "it is probably too late to stop the pipeline now."

According to the diplomat, the U.S. Congress does not understand why Germany is not making itself less dependent on Russian gas and, from Washington's perspective, is actually subsidizing Russia.

He said that Germany should not make itself dependent on U.S. domestic politics, but it is necessary to make sure that the U.S. still correctly understands the policy of Germany.

Ischinger added that Germany's gas import needs will not diminish in the medium term if the country is going to abandon coal after abandoning nuclear power by 2030.
