NATO ministerial meeting ends in Riga: Russia warned of "serious consequences" in case of attack on Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned the Russian Federation that any possible aggression by the country against Ukraine would be costly. The Alliance has ways to contain Moscow's actions. He said this on Wednesday, December 1, after a meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member states. The talks were held in the Latvian capital Riga.

The politician reminded Moscow that aggression against the Ukrainian state would have "serious consequences."

"The ministers made it clear that any future Russian aggression would be costly and would have serious political and economic consequences," the secretary general said.

Stoltenberg also recalled the possibility of additional sanctions against the Kremlin and added that NATO's support for Ukraine's territorial integrity "remains unwavering."

"Our support for sovereignty and territorial integrity remains unwavering. And we continue to seek to strengthen our support for Ukraine," the North Atlantic Alliance spokesman added.

He acknowledged that Russia continues "aggressive and destabilizing actions against its neighbors," as well as increasing military power in and around Ukraine.

"We need to remain vigilant and avoid an escalation of the conflict," Stoltenberg concluded.
