U.S. confirms support for NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia - State Department statement

The U.S. continues to support the decision made at the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, according to which Georgia and Ukraine will become NATO members. The U.S. State Department said in a statement.

"The United States continues to support the NATO decision outlined in the 2008 Bucharest Summit Declaration and also confirmed, including at the Brussels Summit in June 2021, that Georgia and Ukraine will become members of NATO," the document said.

Washington stressed that the path to NATO membership for both countries is detailed in their Annual National Programs.

"Both Georgia and Ukraine are already members of the Enhanced Opportunity Partnership (EOP), which enhances their interoperability as well as their ability to conduct exercises with NATO allies," the State Department recalled.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken begins his European tour Monday, with visits to Riga and Stockholm scheduled. In Riga, the head of the U.S. Department of State will participate in a NATO ministerial meeting to discuss, among other things, the situation around Ukraine. The meeting will be held on November 30-1 in Riga.
