Saakashvili was tortured in custody - lawyer

Mikheil Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia and head of the Executive Committee of reforms of Ukraine, who a few days ago began his hunger strike, was tortured in custody. This was stated by his lawyer Dmitry Sadzaglishvili on November 22.

"In normal countries a prisoner would be released for torture and inhuman treatment, or at least he would be given a chance to recover in a civil hospital and not in detention," Sadzaglishvili said.

In his opinion, Saakashvili is a political prisoner.

"The third president of Georgia is a political prisoner and we have direct evidence of that, statements by acting Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili publicly stating that Saakashvili's detention and indictment was due to his continuing involvement in Georgian politics," the lawyer said.
