Protesters at Rustav Prison demand Saakashvili's release

Supporters of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili have gathered near Rustav Prison the day before after news of the politician's deteriorating health. This was reported by «Georgia News».

Those present at the rally demand the release of the former president of Georgia. Some participants in the spontaneous action called on the politician to end the hunger strike. Mikheil Saakashvili's brother says the same.

«Like everyone here, I am very worried. Mouse, maybe at least for a while you will stop (starve) or think about treatment… I have always been, are and will be there, but now your health is very important,» said David Saakashvili.

Meanwhile, Saakashvili's lawyer Nika Gvaramiya said that he would seek a meeting with his client in the morning. He expressed hope that together with Mikheil Saakashvili, they would make «certain decisions regarding his condition». Gvaramia stressed that his lawyers could not act against the ex-president's will, but would try to do everything possible to ensure that the politician's life was not in danger.

The leader of the United National Movement, Nick Melia, also joined the action. He blamed the health and life of the former president on Bidzin Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

«There is no going back. We should all gather at Rustaveli on October 14, regardless of party affiliation,» Melia said. According to him, the leaders of the END are in touch with international partners. Melia plans to meet with foreign ambassadors accredited to Georgia.

Saakashvili considers himself a political prisoner and has gone on a hunger strike since his arrest. For ten days he refused to eat, periodically drinking only juices and water with honey. The former president's personal doctor said the day before that Mikheil Saakashvili needed to be transferred to a medical facility due to his health condition.
