Bulgaria is preparing amendments to the criminal code to investigate Russia's war crimes against Ukraine

The Bulgarian authorities are preparing amendments to the country's criminal code that will make it possible to bring Russia to justice for its aggressive war against Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Justice of Bulgaria Atanas Slavov in the Euractiv publication.

"Our goal is for Bulgaria to be able to initiate criminal proceedings, exercising universal jurisdiction, for war crimes and crimes against peace and humanity in Ukraine," he said.

These steps are considered important to support international efforts to investigate Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Bulgaria seeks to join other EU countries that have already opened war crimes prosecutions in Ukraine.

"It is extremely important that Bulgaria can prosecute war crimes cases in Ukraine using universal jurisdiction, given the large number of Ukrainian refugees in the country. They can testify," Slavov said.
