US warns of rapid escalation in Saudi Arabia amid Houthi attacks on airports and critical infrastructure

The United States has issued a security alert warning of a potential rapid escalation of hostilities in Saudi Arabia following attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi forces on civilian airports and critical infrastructure, which have caused civilian casualties and widespread travel disruptions.

In a security alert issued on October 21, the US diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia warned that the ongoing hostilities could escalate rapidly and spread beyond the areas currently affected by the attacks.

According to the US Embassy, Iranian-backed Houthis have carried out attacks against Saudi Arabia, targeting civilian airports and other critical infrastructure. The strikes have resulted in civilian casualties and significant disruptions to air travel across the Kingdom.

The warning comes amid heightened concerns over regional security and the possibility of further attacks on strategic infrastructure.

US imposes airport restrictions on government personnel

In response to the deteriorating security situation, the US government has introduced additional travel restrictions for its personnel stationed in Saudi Arabia.

American government employees are now required to obtain special authorization from the Chief of Mission before using any airport in the Kingdom, following recent missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks on aviation facilities.

The US Embassy confirmed that operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh remained suspended at the time of the October 21 alert.

Meanwhile, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam continued operating, although passengers were experiencing delays and flight cancellations.

The restrictions highlight growing concerns over the vulnerability of civilian aviation infrastructure amid the ongoing hostilities.

Washington warns of further attacks and airspace closures

The US diplomatic mission urged American citizens to exercise extreme caution when travelling through Saudi Arabian airports, warning of the possibility of additional attacks, sudden airspace closures and further disruptions to commercial flights.

US citizens were also advised to follow emergency instructions issued by Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense authorities through the country’s cellular broadcast alert system.

The Embassy recommended that travellers verify their flight status directly with airlines and airport authorities before departing for airports.

The security alert underscores Washington’s concerns that the confrontation involving Iranian-backed Houthi forces could intensify, potentially threatening civilian infrastructure and disrupting regional air connectivity.

While the US warning focuses on immediate security risks within Saudi Arabia, the Embassy’s assessment that hostilities could spread beyond the affected area raises concerns about the potential for a broader regional escalation.
