Reuters: Russia launched anti-space weapon capable of attacking satellites

Last week, Russia may have launched an anti-space weapon into low Earth orbit. Reuters reports this with reference to a statement by the US Space Command (USSPACECOM).

Thus, on May 16, Russia launched at least nine satellites into space, including COSMOS 2576 - which US intelligence believes is a weapon capable of attacking other satellites.

This new weapon was deployed by Moscow in the same orbit as a US government satellite.

It is noted that COSMOS 2576 - is a type of Russian military space “inspector vehicle” that, according to US officials, “demonstrates reckless behavior in space.”

At a briefing, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said that “we have a responsibility to be ready to protect and defend the space sphere and provide continuous and uninterrupted support to the Joint Armed Forces and Joint Contingents.”
