The reason for the Russian attack on Zarichne in Zaporizhzhia region on November 3, 2023, when more than 30 soldiers of the 128th separate mining and assault brigade of the Transcarpathian region were killed in formation, could be the hacking of military messengers by Russian hackers. Illia Vitiuk, head of the SBU's cybersecurity department, said this in an interview.
According to him, one of the main threats is sending messages to hack the messengers of specific military personnel, which are sent by the Armageddon hacker group.
"Thousands of such messages are sent. When they manage to hack the device, the enemy gets access to messengers and computers through mail. This often leads to tragic consequences," said Vitiuk.
He noted that during the investigation of the deaths of the soldiers of the 128th Brigade, the SBU found out that one of the devices with the Signal messenger received a message about a specific date and place of military formation, where the missile arrived.
"Now this is one of the main versions that the targeting was made possible by technical penetration. This case clearly demonstrates how dangerous the use of cyber means in military operations is," said the head of the department.
