Tragedy in Svitlovodsk: A man grabbed a gun from a police officer and committed suicide

In the city of Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad region, a man grabbed a service weapon from a patrol officer who had arrived on an emergency call and committed suicide. The State Bureau of Investigation has opened a criminal investigation, the agency's press service reports.


According to preliminary data, on the night of March 28, law enforcement officers in Svitlovodsk received a report that a local resident was threatening to commit suicide.


Upon arriving at the scene, the police unit observed the man's inadequate behavior and called an ambulance. After medical examination, he was to be taken to a mental hospital in the regional center.


However, the man grabbed an assault rifle from the police officer and shot himself in the head. He died on the spot from the wound.


Currently, SBI officers are establishing all the circumstances of the incident, and criminal proceedings have been initiated on the fact of official negligence (Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Forensic examinations and an internal investigation are also underway, which will result in further procedural decisions. The sanction of the article provides for a sentence of up to 8 years in prison.


It is worth noting that earlier Ukrainian media reported that the man who was to be taken to the TCC committed suicide.
