The GUR has revealed who attacked the Russian airfield in Soltsy, Novgorod region, in August 2023. A Tu-22 strategic bomber burned down there and, according to Ukraine, two more were damaged.

As it turned out, the airfield was attacked by a group of scouts who had walked more than 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border to the airfield. 

On the way back, the group was ambushed and its commander, Oleh Babiy, was killed, the Main Intelligence Directorate reported. Babiy was covering the retreat of his group. 

As a reminder, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed at the time that the airfield was attacked by a drone. Allegedly, Oleh Babiy's group approached Soltsy and launched copters loaded with explosives at the planes.
