The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, commented on the proposal to deprive the disabled of the 3rd group of deferment during a telethon.
In his opinion, the decision on fitness for military service does not depend on a person's disability, but on the assessment of the military medical commission.
"I believe that today the operation with disability groups 2-3 is not relevant, because it is not a person's disability that decides fitness for military service, but the military medical commission that determines whether a person is fit for military service or not," Zaluzhnyi said.
Zaluzhnyi said that in the new draft law, the General Staff "agreed" with the need to leave two concepts in the legislation - a person who is fit for military service and a person who is not.
"To get rid of such a concept as 'limitedly fit'. And, accordingly, when we answer these questions - fit or not fit - we will understand whether it makes sense for us to continue to operate with such concepts as a disabled person of groups 2 and 3. We want the army to be filled with people who are physically fit to fight. But this will be decided by the MMC," said the chief.
Zaluzhnyi also said that "who will have a deferment or who will not have a deferment, who will be drafted by the state - today I believe that this is not my competence."
According to him, there are central executive bodies that determine who should be drafted.
"I need people, I need ammunition and I need weapons to continue fighting," Zaluzhnyi added.
