A holiday in honor of Lesya Ukrainka: Georgia celebrates a traditional event

Over the weekend, the city of Surami, a central Georgian city, hosted a traditional event dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka, one of the most famous writers in the history of Ukrainian literature. This celebration has been held in the city since 1952 and continues to attract citizens from Georgia and Ukraine. The event was also joined by diplomats from the Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia, who laid a wreath at the poetess' monument.

Pupils of the 3rd grade of the Surami State School, named after Lesya Ukrainka, recited poems in Ukrainian. The festivities also included performances by folk and pop choirs and ensembles from the city.

In honor of this date, a delegation from the city of Obukhiv, located in the Kyiv region, arrived in Surami at the invitation of the Khashur City Administration. The delegation presented gifts to the Lesya Ukrainka Museum, representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia, and the school named after Lesya Ukrainka in Surami.

The first large-scale celebration called "Lesyaoba" took place in Surami in 1952 with the participation of a large delegation from Ukraine. The initiator of this celebration was the famous Georgian writer Giorgi Leonidze. His initiative was supported by the famous Georgian actor Nato Vachnadze and the Georgian intelligentsia. Since then, Lesya Ukrainka has become a symbol of friendship between Georgia and Ukraine.
