On Wednesday, June 28, French President Emmanuel Macron stated the need for the Vilnius NATO summit to form a concrete path to Ukraine's membership in the Alliance.
Macron said this while speaking together with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Elysee Palace in Paris, Euractiv reports.
"We will have to determine the way to shape the perspective of Ukraine's accession to NATO, which we opened in 2008 in Bucharest," Macron said.
He added that at the summit in Vilnius, NATO will decide on further support for Ukraine.
"The decisions we will make will oblige us for years to come - I mean, first of all, the support of Ukraine, in which we must make long-term commitments," Macron emphasized.
Macron noted that allies are helping Ukraine "reform the Ukrainian armed forces, promote interoperability with Alliance forces and provide support in the non-lethal sector."
As EuroPravda wrote, despite stereotypes, France and personally President Macron are now lobbyists for inviting Ukraine to NATO.
The summit of NATO leaders will take place on July 11-12 in Vilnius.
According to Le Monde, France has changed its cautious position regarding Ukraine's membership in NATO.
