Georgia wants to ban surrogacy for foreigners, because the prime minister is afraid of gays

The Government of Georgia submitted to the Parliament an initiative to strengthen the rules of surrogacy and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

This is reported by "Georgia Online".

The initiative provides, in particular, that surrogate motherhood and IVF on the territory of Georgia will be allowed only to citizens of the country. Foreigners will not be able to use these services.

They also plan to ban advertising of surrogate motherhood services - information about this will be disseminated only by the Ministry of Health.

Surrogate mothers are prohibited from receiving monetary compensation. According to the initiative, only direct costs of pregnancy and childbirth can be covered.

Clinics that provide assisted reproductive services must obtain a special license.

Restrictions on surrogate motherhood and IVF are planned to be introduced in Georgia from January 1, 2024.

"This is a complex issue that has been turned into a business, it is disturbing to leave it unregulated... I'm sorry for the rude expression, but in fact the "order" is placed directly in the form of advertising on the sites. Our women are offered a "profitable business", - said the Prime Minister Minister of Georgia Iraklii Garibashvili.

Among the arguments, Garibashvili mentioned that the fate of surrogate children who are taken out of the country cannot be controlled further, and there is information that "children can be taken by same-sex couples."

It will be recalled that in 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron approved a law according to which sperm and egg donors lost their right to anonymity.

The decision aims to allow laboratory-conceived children to learn the identity of their biological father or mother after reaching adulthood.
