Latvia will stop guarding the residence of the Russian ambassador in Jurmala

The Government of Latvia plans to amend the order "On objects protected by the State Police", according to which it is planned to stop guarding the building of the residence of the Russian ambassador in Jurmala.

 This is reported by Delfi.

The amendments, which provide for the exclusion of the residence of the ambassador of the Russian Federation from the list of protected objects, were developed at the initiative of the State Police.

According to the current rules, the Latvian State Police is obliged to protect foreign diplomatic and consular missions in the country.

Amendments are planned to be made at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, May 23.

On February 20, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia informed the State Police about the decision to reduce the level of diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation from February 24, 2023. According to this order, consular employees of the Russian Federation in Latvia have the status of "authorized employees".

The ambassador of the Russian Federation has already left Latvia, the building in Jurmala no longer has the status of the residence of the ambassador of the Russian Federation and loses the privileges specified in the first paragraph of Article No. 30 of the Vienna Convention of 1961. On these grounds, the Latvian government intends to stop protecting the building.
