Training of Ukrainian fighters on American Abrams tanks will begin in the coming weeks. This decision was made at today's meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine in the Rammstein format.
This is reported by the Associated Press.
As the newspaper writes, citing officials, 31 tanks will arrive at the Grafenwer training ground in Germany at the end of May.
"Ukrainian military will start training in a couple of weeks. These trainings will take about 10 weeks," AR quoted the source as saying.
It is indicated that the training will not take place on the tanks that the USA will transfer to Ukraine. Instead, the States are already upgrading 31 M1A1 battle tanks to send to the Ukrainians on the front lines.
"This idea is that the Ukrainian troops will undergo training until the moment when the updated tanks are ready and can perform combat tasks. These vehicles will be converted to meet the needs of Ukraine," the source explains to the publication.
According to officials, about 250 Ukrainian servicemen will undergo training - some will learn to drive tanks, and others - to repair and maintain them.
"After the first 10 weeks, additional training on how to fight and maneuver tanks may also be conducted," the officials added on condition of anonymity.
As previously reported, the United States plans to deliver Abrams tanks to Ukraine by the end of this year.
Note that the US will provide Ukraine with Abrams M1A1 instead of the M1A2 version. As explained in the Pentagon, this will speed up the supply of tanks.
