Azerbaijan took control of the road between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, where the Russian military is stationed

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced that the country's armed forces have taken control of the Lachin road, the main transport artery between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

This is stated in a statement on the department's website.

The Ministry of Defense reported that in connection with the commissioning of the new Lachynska road, several commanding heights, main and auxiliary roads, as well as a large border area between the villages of Jagazur and Zabukh of the Lachyn district were taken under control.

Gela Vasadze, an expert at the Georgian Center for Strategic Analysis, believes that in practice this means taking control of the communications of the territory controlled by the Russian military, which operates in the region as a "peacekeeping contingent."

"Moscow is practically deprived of the main toolkit in Karabakh for actions on the ground. And the Russian military is left with only police functions," he wrote on his Facebook page.

As you know, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan rose in December, when Azerbaijani protesters posing as environmental activists blocked the Lachin Corridor.

At the end of February, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations applied temporary measures to Armenia's claim against Azerbaijan and obliged the latter to ensure the passage of people and transport through the corridor.
