Britain's counterintelligence will create a unit to counter spies from China and Russia

As part of the UK's renewed defense, security and foreign policy strategy, MI5 will help businesses and other agencies counter spies from China and Russia.

This is reported by The Telegraph and The Times.

The updated strategy calls for a "national security agency" to be created within MI5 to advise businesses, universities and other organizations targeted by industrial espionage.

Attempts by Chinese and Russian hackers, supported by their governments, to steal data on British coronavirus vaccines during the pandemic, including from the University of Oxford, are cited as an example.

In addition, MI5 will also provide guidance for companies and other organizations to inquire about engaging with Chinese companies, doing business in China or purchasing equipment from Chinese suppliers, and develop advice on working with Chinese IT companies such as Huawei and Hikvision.

Britain's updated defense and security strategy also calls for improved language training for diplomats working in China and extra funding for the BBC World Service, a foreign language channel, to counter Chinese and Russian disinformation.
