The USA explains its reluctance to provide Ukraine with ATACMS missiles by the fact that its stocks are insufficient

The administration of US President Joe Biden explains the reluctance of the Ukrainian side to hand over longer-range ATACMS missiles to the fact that in this case they can be left too much in the reserves of the American army.

This was reported by Politico with reference to four interlocutors.

At the latest meeting, Pentagon officials allegedly told the Ukrainian side that the current stockpile of ATACMS is not that great, and providing Ukraine with these munitions would deplete the stockpile and harm US military capabilities in the future.

"Before each package of aid for Ukraine, we assess that we have enough in our warehouses for our own readiness... There are other ways to provide Ukraine with funds in order to hit the targets," one of the anonymous interlocutors, who holds a high position, highlighted. Pentagon.

Previously, the main reason for the release was the fear of escalation in the event that Ukraine starts hitting the deep rear of the Russian army with these missiles on the territory of the Russian Federation itself.

ATACMS manufacturer Lockheed Martin has produced about 4,000 such missiles in various configurations over the past two decades. some were sold to the Allies. About 600 units were used by the US during the war in the Persian Gulf and against Iraq.

One of the interlocutors reports that Kyiv is thinking about negotiating ATACMS from another allied country that has them in service, and getting US consent to re-export and financing to buy them back. ATACMS owners include South Korea, Poland, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Qatar and Bahrain.

One of the sources from Ukraine notes that Kyiv does not expect any fundamentally new type of weapons in the aid package from the US, which will be announced in the near future - it will be focused on other important needs, such as spare parts for weapons, shells for artillery and air defense.

In addition, Kyiv does not want to increasingly ask its partners to reveal fewer details after the decision to provide one or another weapon - to know in advance what and in which most of the unfinished Ukraine did not help Russia prepare countermeasures in the atmosphere. At the same time, partners - in particular the USA - want to demonstrate the scale of their support for Ukraine, in particular, through several indicators.
