Berlin decided to provide Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks, approves the shipment by partners - statement

The German government announced the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, initially it was about the shipment of 14 tanks by Germany. This was announced by the official representative of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, in a statement on January 25.

"Today in the cabinet, the chancellor announced further support for Ukraine with the supply of Leopard 2 tanks. The corresponding approval is also given to partner countries. This is closely coordinated with international partners," wrote Hebestreit on Twitter.

As reported in a statement by a representative of the German government, "Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday in the cabinet that Germany will continue to increase military support for Ukraine. The federal government has decided to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with Leopard 2 main battle tanks."

As reported, this is "the result of intensive consultations with Germany's closest European and international partners."

"This decision is in line with our well-known line of support for Ukraine to the best of our ability. We act in close coordination at the international level," said the Chancellor of Germany in Berlin.

"The goal is to quickly assemble two tank battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine. As a first step, Germany will provide a company of 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from Bundeswehr stocks. Other European partners will also provide Leopard 2 tanks. Training of Ukrainian crews should begin soon in Germany. In addition to training, the package will also include logistics, ammunition and system maintenance," the German government said.

"Germany will issue appropriate transfer permits to partner countries that want to quickly deliver Leopard 2 tanks from their warehouses to Ukraine," the statement said.
