Congress decided to release data on Trump's tax returns

The US House Committee on Taxation and Customs is preparing to release information on former President Donald Trump's tax returns for several years.

This was reported by The Washington Post.

On Tuesday, Committee members voted 24 to 16 to release the data. This was preceded by a three-year struggle by the Democrats to get the relevant documents at the disposal of the committee. The Supreme Court recently rejected Trump's latest attempt to withhold access to the data.

After the vote, the committee released its first findings -- that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) did not audit Trump's tax returns during his first two years in office, even though it was supposed to, and never completed any audits during his tenure. The first audit of Trump's declarations began in 2019 at the request of a member of the committee from Democrats, but only one clerk was assigned to the work.

Democrats on the committee say Trump lied during the 2016 campaign that he could not release his own tax information because of an allegedly ongoing IRS audit.

The publication notes that the publication of data on Trump's tax returns is a rather exceptional event for the United States and nothing like this has happened since 1973, when the IRS handed over President Nixon's declarations to Congress.

From the information already released by the committee, it follows that in some years Trump paid very little in federal taxes, despite large incomes - because he declared large losses and deductions from tax liabilities. So, in 2016 and 2017, the Trump couple paid $750, and in 2020 - allegedly nothing.

The documents themselves should be published in a few days.

Trump's office has already called the committee's decision a "politically motivated attack."

House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi said she would initiate legislation to require the IRS to audit the finances of US presidents every year.
