EU: Serbia and Kosovo on the verge of the most dangerous crisis in the last decade

The European Union believes that Serbia and Kosovo are on the brink of a dangerous crisis and calls on both parties to fulfill their obligations within the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, Euractiv writes.

"We are very concerned about the situation in the Western Balkans," Borrell said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers to discuss the situation in the region, adding that "unnecessary and counterproductive tensions" between Kosovo and Serbia are "reaching a very, very dangerous level" and creating a situation where "unfortunately, we are on the verge of another crisis".

Speaking about the latest tensions, he called it the most serious and dangerous crisis in a decade and said the withdrawal of Serbs from Kosovo's institutions had created a vacuum.

"The worst can happen in this vacuum, so both sides need to show more flexibility," Borrell warned.

The situation in the north of the region has become more volatile in recent weeks, with members of the Serbian community resigning from Kosovo institutions in protest against the government's requirement that all cars owned by Kosovo citizens have Kosovo license plates. Serbia opposes this as it continues to not recognize the independence of Kosovo.

"The Kosovo Serbs must return to the institutions. The Kosovo authorities must show flexibility in the issue of license plates and work without delay on the implementation of the agreement on the association of municipalities with a Serbian majority," he added.
