Today, November 10, the European Parliament approved Croatia's accession to the Schengen area, which entails the abolition of internal border controls between the country and the EU.
This is reported by the press service of the European Parliament.
"Croatia is ready to join the Schengen free movement zone. It has fulfilled all the necessary conditions. I am sure that this will be another success story of European integration," said the member of the European Parliament, Paulo Rangel.
He also called on EU member states to give the green light to Croatia's accession to the Schengen area as soon as possible to abolish internal border controls by the end of this year.
According to him, the granting of Schengen zone status to Croatia, as well as the inclusion of Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen, sends a strong signal to the Western Balkans about their future aspirations to the EU.
The final official decision on the withdrawal of internal control for Croatia must now be taken unanimously by the EU member states that are part of the Schengen area.
