The war in Ukraine claimed the lives of at least 5,587,000 civilians, and another 7,890,000 were injured - UN

Casualties among civilians from February 24, when Russia launched a war against Ukraine, to August 21 amounted to 13,477 civilians (13,212 a week earlier), including 5,587 dead (5,514), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported in Monday.

"The cause of most of the recorded cases of death or injury of civilians was the use of explosive weapons with a large impact zone, including heavy artillery and rocket salvo systems, as well as missile and airstrikes," the document on UN data emphasizes.

This applies, for example, to such settlements as Mariupol (Donetsk region), Izyum (Kharkiv region), Lysychansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk (Lugansk region), where, according to reports, numerous cases of civilian deaths or injuries have occurred.

According to confirmed UN data, 2,125 men, 1,490 women, 175 boys and 149 girls died, while the gender of 38 children and 1,574 adults has not yet been determined.

Among the 7,890 wounded, there are 236 boys and 172 girls, as well as 202 children whose gender has not yet been determined.

Compared to the data on August 14, 6 children died and 15 more were injured.

If earlier the summary of the number of losses by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was published daily, and then only on working days, since July it has become weekly. This summary, like the previous one, also includes data for months.

According to them, March remains the deadliest month for civilians, with at least 3,175 deaths. In April, according to the OHCHR publication, the number of civilian deaths due to the war decreased to 677, in May - to 460, in June - to 368 and in July - to 360. In the first five days of the war from February 24 to 28, 340 people died , and in three weeks of August – 207, the UN notes.

At the same time, the number of wounded in July – 1,099 – was higher than in June and May – 1,029 and 1,012, respectively, but lower than in April and March – 1,254 and 2,400, respectively.

According to the data, in the first three weeks of August, 201 people died and another 598 were injured from large-scale explosive weapons, while mines and explosive remnants of war killed 6 and injured 36 (5% of total casualties).

The summary traditionally states that the increase in indicators compared to the previous summary should not be attributed only to cases after August 14, since during this period the Office verified several cases from the previous days.
