A sea mine was defused near a seaside resort in Romania

A team of combat divers from the Romanian Navy, specializing in the neutralization and destruction of explosive devices, on Sunday deactivated a sea mine 3.6 km from the seaside resort of Eforie.

This was reported by Digi24.

The mine was successfully defused around 8:10 p.m., and a team of divers returned to base. According to the procedure, the divers laid a charge and detonated the mine.

"The military divers determined that it was a naval mine of the NM type, which posed a danger to safe navigation in Romanian territorial waters. They transported the mine to a safe area and destroyed it by explosion," the Romanian Defense Ministry said.

The Romanian Navy crew consisted of five divers who arrived at the location of the mine in two boats.

"Undoubtedly, this mine comes from the coastal areas to the north of Romania, that is, from the zone of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict," the report said.

YM-type sea mines can drift until they meet an obstacle. They are contact sea mines and explode when they meet an obstacle. If spotted in time, as was the case with the Eforie mine, the mine can be defused, explained Romanian Navy spokesman Cornel Pavel.

As noted, this is the second time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the Romanian Navy is involved in the neutralization of sea mines. For the first time, the mine was found and neutralized at the end of March.

On June 30, a sea mine spotted from a civilian ship in the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast was defused.
