Santa Claus Theme Park in his "hometown" Rovaniemi in Lapland is ready to shelter thousands of people in its bomb shelter in case of a potential enemy attack on Finland.
This is stated in the publication of Reuters.
The Christmas residence of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi is visited by thousands of people every year. The underground corridors contain Santa's post office, elf school, craft workshops and Christmas trees.
However, the main purpose of the underground was originally far from festive, as it was built as a bomb shelter to accommodate up to 3,600 people in the event of a bombing, chemical or nuclear attack
The shelter has camping beds, first aid kits, and even equipment to dig the tunnel back to the surface if the structure collapses. Water is supplied from a separate source, although people who will be hiding here will need to bring their own food.
"In the event of a crisis, the people of Rovaniemi will be protected here," commented Rovaniemi Security Chief Tapio Hietakangas, 54.
Santa's Sanctuary is just one of about 50,000 built after the Scandinavian country survived two wars with the Soviet Union during World War II.
In peacetime, this large network, usually housing swimming pools, sports centers or garages, has become part of everyday life throughout Finland. They could be turned into housing for about 80 percent of Finland's 5.5 million population within hours if hostilities crossed the 1,300-kilometer Finnish-Russian border or even in the event of an accident at a nuclear power plant in Russia.
