According to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and former U.S. Special Representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker, Georgia is no longer a regional leader. The West is very hopeful and is waiting for new elections in the country.
This is reported on the Interpressnews portal.
"Georgia is no longer a leader. Years ago we said Georgia was the best prepared to join NATO or even the European Union - now everyone sees Georgia as a country whose democracy has gone backwards," Volker said.
Explaining his statement, the ex-diplomat said that Georgian democracy was influenced by the poorly conducted elections, the opposition's decision not to go to the parliament and ignoring the Charles Michel agreement.
Now, as Volker noted, they are "waiting for the next elections and hope that it will be better.
Volcker, moreover, noted that Ukraine is in the lead now, and the opportunity given to the country will open the door even for Moldova and Georgia.
"Ukraine, on the other hand, has become a country that is ready to defend itself against Russian aggression. As a result, Ukraine looks more like a sovereign, independent and European state in the eyes of the EU and the US. Consequently, their opportunities on the way to NATO and EU membership are greater than before, and now Ukraine is in the lead," the former official said.
