Armenian opposition protests against concessions on Nagorno-Karabakh announced

The Armenian opposition has announced civil disobedience actions, opposing concessions on Nagorno-Karabakh and demanding the resignation of the government.

This is reported by the Armenian service of Radio Liberty.

After a week of public awareness actions, the opposition demanding the resignation of the government held a crowded rally on France Square in Yerevan on Sunday. Some opposition supporters set up tents on the square and stayed there overnight.

Parliament vice speaker and opposition leader Ishkhan Saghatelyan said: "Any political status for Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan is unacceptable for us. Pashinyan betrayed people's trust and must leave."

On Monday, the opposition began acts of disobedience from 8:30 am. More than ten central streets of Yerevan were blocked.

Police are detaining citizens who have blocked Khorenatsi Street in an attempt to open the road. Demonstrators are installing trash cans and benches at the Mashtots-Amiryan intersection. France Square is closed on all four sides.

The protests began after statements by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that the international community expects the Armenian side to lower the bar on demands for the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The opposition maintains that the current Armenian government intends to make concessions to Azerbaijan regarding Nagorno-Karabakh. This explains the need to remove Pashinyan from power through public pressure.

In 2020, Nagorno-Karabakh was at the center of a six-week war that killed more than 6,500 people before a Russian-brokered cease-fire agreement ended.

Under the agreement, Armenia handed over some of the territories it had controlled for decades, and Russia sent some 2,000 "peacekeepers" to oversee the cease-fire.
