War in Ukraine may cause a food crisis - UN

The UN has warned that the war in Ukraine could have global consequences. In particular, there may be problems with food.

UN Secretary General António Guterres said that a war in Ukraine could cause a "three-dimensional crisis" in areas previously affected by the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.

"We are now facing a major storm that threatens to devastate the economies of developing countries... The most vulnerable people around the world may become collateral victims of yet another disaster for which they are not responsible," Guterres said.

The U.N. report states that Ukraine and Russia provide about 30 percent of the wheat and barley consumed worldwide. The U.N. says up to 1.7 billion people in 107 countries are likely to be affected by at least one of the three crises, especially in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.
