The Lithuanian Seimas calls on the United Nations to take immediate measures to enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine to stop the mass deaths of civilians. The resolution on active measures to ensure the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure in Ukraine was unanimously supported by 100 members of the Seimas.
This is reported by LRT.
The Seimas appeals to the parliaments of democratic countries with a call, while technical measures to ensure a no-fly zone are being prepared, to seek the opening of humanitarian corridors on the territory of Ukraine. In particular, using the mechanism of the UN or creating a coalition of willing and able states to allow the civilian population to safely leave the war zones and territories illegally occupied and controlled by the Russian Federation, as well as to protect humanitarian convoys.
At the same time, the Lithuanian deputies called for declaring the airspace over these areas, as well as Ukrainian nuclear power plants and nuclear waste storage facilities a no-fly zone.
The resolution stressed that declaring a no-fly zone would pave the way for taking active measures enabling UN peacekeepers to ensure safety of humanitarian corridors and Ukrainian nuclear power plants and nuclear waste storage sites.
Lithuanian parliamentarians call on parliaments of democratic countries to urge their governments to announce additional sanctions against Russia and Belarus that promote Russia's military actions in Ukraine.
The Seimas also calls on democratic countries to immediately close their airspace and ports to Russian aircraft and ships.
The resolution also calls on the Lithuanian Seimas to ensure that EU member states impose secondary sanctions on states, individuals and entities trying to circumvent EU sanctions.
We shall remind you that earlier the Estonian parliament called on the UN member states to close the sky over Ukraine.
