The treason case opened against Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has gained a global resonance.
Thus, this morning Melinda Simmons, British Ambassador to Ukraine noted on her Twitter: "All political leaders in Ukraine need to unite against Russian aggression right now. At this time, it's important not to lose sight of that and not be distracted by the polarization of domestic politics."
Усім політичним лідерам в Україні потрібно об’єднатися проти російської агресії прямо зараз. У цей час важливо не втратити це з поля зору і не відволікатися на поляризацію внутрішньої політики. #Україна
Also, representatives of independent expert circles and intellectual communities in Ukraine have made a statement open for signing calling on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop splitting Ukrainian society, referring to the persecution of the fifth president of Ukraine, the leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
"We consider it necessary to speak out about the internal political situation that is emerging around the criminal prosecution of Petro Poroshenko. Without assuming the right to provide a legal or moral assessment, at the same time we consider it absolutely necessary to draw the attention of political elites and the general public to the strategic aspect of this case," said in a statement published on his Facebook page the head of the public initiative "Viborcha Rada UA" Yevhen Bystritsky.
"Today Ukraine is experiencing a large-scale complex crisis. We have the highest level of threats to national security since 2014... The level of international tension is the highest since the Cold War. The country is threatened by a deep energy crisis... Against this threatening background, the leading political force is taking short-sighted steps that significantly increase strategic risks for the country, rejecting the age-old truth of the need for national unity in the face of the aggressor and in crisis," the document says.
Its authors note that Ukraine can be saved "only by internal political unity, when all citizens, regardless of ideological and political preferences, will unite to withstand a large-scale crisis," also all political elites should cooperate, "forgetting about contradictions and mutual grievances."
"The actions of the current Ukrainian government, directly aimed at splitting society and increasing the temperature of internal political confrontation, can be extremely destructive to the Ukrainian statehood. We call on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop splitting Ukrainian society at this risky time, and on all politicians and citizens to cooperate on national unity, increasing the stability of Ukraine, confronting threats and overcoming the crisis," the statement stresses.
The document was signed by Bystritsky, ex-Deputy Minister of Education, writer Maxim Strikha, Chairman of the Board of the Center for Political and Legal Reforms Igor Koliushko, Co-Chairman of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine (Vaad) Joseph Zisels, analyst of the Ilk Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation Petro Burkovsky, academicians Vadim Loktev, Valeriy Yashchuk, Nikolay Kharchenko, Viktor Grinchenko, a number of scholars and public figures.
