Coronavirus chronicles: China shut down million-dollar city, France has new strain, UK is the anti-leader

The city of Yuzhou in China's Henan province closed Monday night after three asymptomatic cases of Covid were discovered there on Sunday, Ukrinform reported.

According to The Guardian, more than 1 million citizens are now required to stay home. Public transportation in the city has been stopped, public meetings and drills have been canceled, and the city center is blocked to entry and exit.

Meanwhile, the number of new cases of infection with coronavirus in the United Kingdom was 218.7 thousand detected in 24 hours, the highest since the beginning of the epidemic. This is evidenced by the data printed on Tuesday on the website of the government information, informs UNN.

The previous record - just over 189.8 thousand - was recorded on December 31. During the last two weeks in the kingdom recorded more than 100 thousand infections per day. In the last week, the number of infections increased by 50.1%. The number of infections since the beginning of the epidemic in the kingdom has reached 13.6 million.

A new strain of coronavirus B.1.640.2 was detected in France and 12 people became infected with it.

This is reported by MedRxiv.

The new strain of coronavirus was detected in the south of France and was spreading in the region. The variant, tentatively identified as B.1.640.2 was investigated with the support of the French government, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

B.1.640.2 is considered Cameroonian in origin and has spread to 12 patients in the south of France.

According to the study, the new strain has 46 new mutations as well as 37 deletions. Scientists have named this strain of coronavirus "IHU."

"The set of mutations and the phylogenetic position of the genomes obtained here indicate, based on our previous definition, a new variant, which we called ""HU,"" the scientists said in a statement.

The first case was found in a vaccinated patient who returned from a trip to Cameroon in mid-November 2021. He had been vaccinated three days before the trip.

Regarding the danger of the new strain, the scientists note that it is too early to talk about it, as research will continue.
