The State Department released a statement on the third anniversary of Whelan's detention by Russian authorities.
The U.S. once again demanded the immediate and unconditional release of American citizens Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed detained in Russia.
"Three years ago, Paul Whelan was detained by Russian authorities. He came to Russia as a tourist, was imprisoned and convicted on false charges," said State Department spokesman Ned Price.
"Secretary Blinken has been very clear that Russia must release American citizens Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed unconditionally and immediately so that they can return home to their families," Price pointed out. - Their release remains an important priority for the United States.
