Coronavirus cannot be defeated by vaccines - UN

It will not be possible to defeat coronavirus by vaccination only. UN Secretary General António Guterres stated about it at press-conference in video format on results of the year, reports Korrespondent.

"COVID-19 is not going anywhere. Now it is becoming clear that the pandemic cannot be eradicated by vaccines alone," he said.

At the same time, he stressed that vaccination prevents hospitalization and death for most of those vaccinated and also slows down the spread of the virus.

"Nevertheless, for some reason the incidence of the disease is not going down," the secretary-general stressed.

According to Guterres, the continued spread of infection around the world is due to inequities in vaccine distribution, people's reluctance to be vaccinated, and "complacency."

He urged all countries to vaccinate their citizens more actively and to reach 40% of the world's population with vaccinations against the coronavirus by the end of the year. He also called for reaching 70% vaccination coverage by the middle of next year.
