The work of British artist Banksy, which partially self-destructed in 2018 with a built-in shredder, sold at auction at Sotheby's for a record 18 and a half million pounds.

Initially, the picture was called «Girl with a balloon». At auction in 2018, it was sold for one million pounds. Immediately after the announcement of the Agreement, a shredder mounted in the frame was put into operation. As a result, half of the picture was turned into «vermicelli». It was saved from complete destruction by the stoppage of the mechanism. Its sudden launch, as well as an unexpected «failure», remain a mystery.

The new owner of the painting appreciated the daring art action and did not cancel the purchase. She gave the picture a new name – «Love in the trash». In early September 2021, the painting returned to auction.

Alex Branzik, director of contemporary art at Sotheby's, said the shredder trick «did not so much destroy the work of art as create a new one».
