The US has approved the sale of Patriot anti-aircraft missile system missiles and related equipment to Ukraine for $2.1 billion, according to the US State Department and Politico journalist Paul McLeary.
"The US State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles and related equipment," the statement notes.
The total value of the deal is $2.1 billion, and it is being funded by European partners and allies.
In addition to the missiles, the package will include classified and unclassified PAC-3 MSE spare parts. The delivery of other necessary elements of logistical supply and program support is also provided.
The State Department emphasized that this agreement will contribute to the national security and foreign policy goals of the United States. It will support the security of a partner country that is a driving force for political and economic stability in Europe.
"This approval means that contract negotiations are now beginning, so the missiles will likely not be delivered for a few years," McLeary states.
