Ukraine and Georgia have reaffirmed their mutual commitment to supporting each other’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders, as senior diplomats met in Tbilisi to discuss Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine, humanitarian assistance and prospects for closer bilateral cooperation.
Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in Georgia, Dmytro Berezhnyi, met Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgi Zurabashvili on Thursday, October 22, for talks covering regional security, bilateral relations and international cooperation.
During the meeting, Berezhnyi briefed the Georgian official on the latest developments in Ukraine, including the consequences of Russian missile and drone strikes targeting civilian facilities and critical infrastructure.
The Ukrainian diplomat highlighted the civilian casualties caused by the attacks and the continuing damage to infrastructure essential to the country’s civilian population.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to respecting and supporting Ukraine’s and Georgia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within their internationally recognised borders.
The diplomats also expressed their readiness to further develop mutually beneficial bilateral relations across areas of shared interest and maintain coordinated efforts within international and regional organisations.
Particular attention was given to cooperation within the Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM, a regional grouping comprising Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
Georgia Highlights Opportunities for Ukraine Through Middle Corridor
Zurabashvili emphasised the potential opportunities for Ukraine arising from Georgia’s strategic infrastructure projects, particularly the development of the Middle Corridor, a transport and trade route connecting Asia and Europe through Central Asia, the Caspian Sea and the South Caucasus.
The corridor has gained increasing attention as countries seek to diversify international trade routes and strengthen transport connectivity between Europe and Asia.
Ukraine Seeks Continued Georgian Assistance for Energy Sector
Berezhnyi thanked the Georgian government for its political support for Ukraine within international and regional organisations, as well as for the humanitarian assistance provided since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
He also expressed hope that Georgia would continue providing humanitarian assistance to support Ukraine’s energy sector, which has faced repeated Russian missile and drone attacks.
The discussions highlighted both countries’ stated commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement, strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating their positions in international forums.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the unresolved territorial conflicts involving the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
