US senators from both parties want to approve a one-year aid package for Ukraine worth between $50 billion and $100 billion in the coming weeks, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Senators from both parties said they see more value in one large package than in several smaller ones. First, it would "give Ukraine a sense of confidence," and second, it would be better "from a political point of view."
Such a package could be adopted between October 16, when the Senate returns from recess, and November 17, the expiration date of the current temporary spending bill.
Senators have expressed limited optimism that the package will be passed. Its size is still being discussed. For example, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham proposed to allocate $60-70 billion, while Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said that in his opinion, the figure should be closer to $100 billion. However, the latter said that he was ready to compromise if the Republicans offered a $60 billion package.
