In recent years, Chinese citizens, sometimes pretending to be tourists, have attempted to enter military bases and other important facilities in the United States up to 100 times, creating a potential threat for possible espionage, The Wall Street Journal reports.
US officials have characterized these individuals as "gatebreakers" for their attempts to enter these facilities without permission, either intentionally or accidentally.
Chinese representatives have attempted to enter a missile site in New Mexico, and other cases have included scuba divers swimming near a missile site in Florida.
These methods can be considered attempts to conduct a security test of the system. After such incidents, Beijing demands reports from its citizens.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has expressed doubt about the US authorities' point of view on these events, calling them "purely malicious fabrications."
