The Council appealed to the President of Georgia with a request to pardon Saakashvili

The Verkhovna Rada appealed to the President of Georgia and the parliaments of EU member states regarding the need to implement a humanitarian act and pardon Mikheil Saakashvili.

 People's deputy Oleksiy Goncharenko reported this in Telegram.

 According to his data, 285 deputies supported the draft resolution No. 9491.

 The Verkhovna Rada in order to preserve the life and health of a citizen of Ukraine:

 called on the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, to grant the ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets access to the citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili;

 appealed to the President of Georgia to perform a humanitarian act and pardon Saakashvili, given his serious physical condition;

 turned to the parliaments of the EU member states with a request to adopt resolutions on the necessity of pardoning Saakashvili by the President of Georgia.

 

 Justification of the pardon

 As noted in the explanatory note to the project, the wide coverage of information in the domestic and international media about the conditions of Saakashvili's detention, as well as relevant diplomatic messages, prompt the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to urgently respond to information about the critical state of health of the third president of Georgia (2004-2013). ), Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili

 "In view of the provisions of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and Punishment of 1984, the draft appeal of the Supreme Council is based on generally accepted international legal standards in the field of humanitarian law and is submitted for the purpose of individualized manifestation of the act humanism and mercy towards the citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili," the document says.

 Saakashvili's health

 Georgian law enforcement officers detained the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, back in October 2021. He was accused of "abuse of power and persecution of political opponents", for which he received six years in prison.

 Since then, the former president of Georgia has gone on hunger strike eight times. Against this background, his health deteriorated significantly. Recently, Saakashvili was present at the court session in an online format. There he showed how much weight he lost.

 After that, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador. Later, the diplomat was sent to Tbilisi, he was advised to hold consultations with the authorities.
