"We conduct a successful defensive operation and from time to time attack on the flanks. This day was no exception - the defense forces advanced up to 500 meters in various areas, liberating Ukrainian land, specifically in the Bakhmut direction," said Serhiy Cherevaty, the speaker of the Eastern Group of Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Freedom TV channel.
In Bakhmut itself, the enemy is advancing, fierce battles are being fought
According to Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Malyar, Ukrainian soldiers who were freed recently in the suburb of Bakhmut did not lose almost 20 square kilometers.
"Fierce battles are taking place in Bakhmut itself. The enemy is advancing somewhat. Everything that can be done in a military sense in this situation - our command and fighters are doing it. They are doing it professionally and at the limit of their capabilities," she assured.
Cherevaty also confirmed that fierce battles are going on in Bakhmut itself.
"The enemy is trying to take this city at any cost. To do this, he literally wipes it off the face of the earth so that the Defense Forces can use the city structures less as fortifications," he said.
According to the Deepstate map on May 17, the occupiers do have an advance in the Bakhmut area in the direction of Khromovoy.

Cherevaty also cited the following statistics: 456 times the enemy fired at the positions of the Ukrainian defenders with various types of artillery, calibers and rocket launchers, "thereby confirming that there is no question of any projectile starvation."
According to the speaker, the Russian invaders understand that the initiative is gradually passing to the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
"Not having a large number of reserves, not having any advantages in the number of equipment and personnel over the enemy, however, we beat him," he said.
As reported, the Ukrainian military liberated about 20 square kilometers from the occupiers in the Bakhmut district. At the same time, the invaders are advancing in the city itself.
It will be recalled that earlier the Ministry of Defense announced that the Defense Forces captured more than ten positions of the Russians near Bakhmut.
