The next elections to the European Parliament will be held from June 6 to 9, 2024.
This is stated in a letter from the Minister for European Affairs of Sweden, Jessica Roswall, whose country currently chairs the EU Council, to the President of the European Parliament, Robert Metsol, EurActiv reports.
The letter explains that since member states have not been able to reach a unanimous decision on the election date, current EU law defaults to early June voting days.
"Since none of the alternative dates received the necessary support, the dates set in the EU election law will apply," Roswall wrote in the letter.
Roberta Metsola proposed holding elections between May 23 and 26.
We will remind you that on May 3, the European Parliament voted to revise the rules of elections to the EU, which will expand the role of people in the election of the president of the European Commission and allow them to vote for pan-European members of the European Parliament.
Under the system devised by MEPs, each voter will have two votes: one to elect MEPs in national constituencies and one in EU constituencies, from which 28 additional seats are elected.
To ensure a balanced geographical representation in these lists, the Member States will be divided into three groups based on their population.
The lists will be filled with candidates from these groups proportionally. Pan-European lists of candidates should be provided by European electoral bodies, such as coalitions of national political parties and/or national associations of voters or European political parties.
It was also reported that Portugal is trying to force the European Union to postpone the date of the 2024 European Parliament elections, which will take place from June 6 to 9. Because Lisbon celebrates Portugal Day on June 10, a national holiday that is preceded by several weekends.
Sources in the European Parliament fear that because of this the turnout at the elections in Portugal will be low.
