The Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic is preparing a register of cars with Ukrainian license plates to keep track of drivers with temporary protection.
The innovation will make it easier for the authorities to issue fines, reports aktualne.cz.
It is assumed that the registry will start working in the second half of 2023. There are about 38,000 cars with Ukrainian license plates in the Czech Republic.
"We are introducing this mainly so that it is possible to trace the responsibility of violators. To match a car with a specific person, which is often difficult now," Transport Minister Martin Kupka told Lidový noviním.
City halls and municipalities cannot issue fines to drivers if the offender has not been identified. In some cases, the Czech authorities can review the vehicle registers of EU countries, but in the case of Ukraine, this will not help.
"We want the law to be simple. The register must contain a connection between the car and the person with the right of temporary protection. There will not be all the technical data about the vehicle, but only the necessary parameters," the minister said.
Currently, vehicles from Ukraine do not have to undergo technical inspection in the Czech Republic, as they are considered cars in international traffic. However, it is also impossible to insure them.
"If an uninsured car causes damage in the Czech Republic, we will compensate the injured party and will not demand compensation from Ukrainian motorists. This assistance is valid for 6 months after leaving the territory of Ukraine," said Volodymyr Krejzar from the Czech Office of Insurers.
After the 6-month period, the insurance company will collect money from the uninsured culprit.
According to insurance companies, from the beginning of March last year to the end of February this year, 173 road accidents involving Ukrainian cars occurred in the Czech Republic.
