China's actions undermine its neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine - British PM

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes that China's latest actions in connection with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine have undermined its status as a neutral party, and London is urging Beijing to take constructive steps in this direction.

Sunak said this on Tuesday during a hearing in the procedural committee of the British House of Commons.

The British Prime Minister recalled that London and other Western capitals welcome China's support for Ukraine's territorial integrity in various statements and formats, but do not believe that Beijing's actions add credibility to it as a neutral party.

"We urge Xi Jinping to speak directly with President Zelenskyі about any specific peace proposal that China is interested in offering... It would be right for China to interact directly with Ukraine on this issue," Sunak said.

Commenting on the recent visit of the Chinese leader to Moscow, the British Prime Minister stated that Russia depends on China, so he calls on Xi Jinping to use his influence with Vladimir Putin to convince him to end this war and withdraw troops from Ukraine as a prerequisite for any negotiations.

"There were various points in China's peace proposal, their support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine really deserves approval. But, as I said, their other actions and other statements have undermined trust in them as a neutral party in this matter," he added.

Although publicly China does advocate a diplomatic solution to the conflict and peace in Ukraine, politically and economically it continues to support Russia. There are data on the supply of dual purpose Chinese goods to the Russian Federation, although so far it is not about lethal weapons.

Against this background, a number of European officials announced visits to China, urging them to listen to its position in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian full-scale war.
