The head of the IAEA commented on Medvedev's statement about the participation of nuclear powers in conflicts

The head of the IAEA, Raphael Grossi, commenting on the statement of the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, about the participation of nuclear powers in conflicts, said that nuclear weapons should not be used in the war in Ukraine. Grossi said this in an interview with Fox News.

"Someone has said that a nuclear war can't be won and can never be fought. And I believe that's true, so I'm not passing judgment on the comments of high-ranking officials of any country. One way to avoid that is to make sure there are no nuclear accidents. Of course . . . I hope that in the course of this conflict nuclear weapons will not be used at all," he said.

Grossi said that he hoped for a long-term presence of the IAEA at the Zaporizhzhуa NPP in order to provide the necessary support and find an institutional solution to the situation. He noted that the agency "hopes for a peaceful solution as soon as possible."

On Thursday, January 19, Medvedov commented on his Telegram page about the statements made at the forum in Davos that "Russia should lose in Ukraine." He wrote that, in his opinion, "nuclear states do not lose major conflicts on which their fate depends," which "should be obvious to any Western politician."

He also stated that Western politicians "do not think to draw an elementary conclusion: the defeat of a nuclear state in a conventional war can provoke the start of a nuclear war."
